Environment
We believe that we are stewards of this blue and green jewel of a planet, so in our every choice we consider the environment. Not that we are perfect - no one is - but we try to be conscious. So, here's a bit about our choices:
Our Food! Please see tab.
Buy Local! We hit the farmer's markets first, then choose products made in Florida, then regionally, then nationally, and only then do we buy something imported from responsible companies. We strive to use local companies in lieu of national chains for our every business dealing. We believe that we vote with every dollar we spend, so let's keep it here instead of sending it somewhere else! This is a win/win deal for our economy and the environment. Check out our Links.
All reusable materials from demolition/construction were either reused, recycled, or donated to Habitat For Humanity's Restore in Fort Pierce, FL.
Recycled loose fiberglass insulation in our attic space.
Our equipment is powered by natural gas. Cleaner for the environment and helpful in keeping down our costs to you.
Our kitchen equipment is refurbished; no additional resources were used. In fact, thanks to a kind donation, our counters and counter tops were salvaged from a renovation.
We have a tankless gas water heater - can not recommend this highly enough! The prices have come down to a very cost effective level, and they are available for purchase/installation for residential/commercial properties through Fort Pierce Utilities Authority. We don't mind the tax credit, either.
We recycle: co-mingled (plastic and aluminum), paper and cardboard. We are fortunate that our local landfill recycles all seven types of plastic – that is rare, indeed. We have made it easy for you to recycle as well; come on in and see. And a very big thank you to Waste Pro for donating the print on our recycling wall!
We compost. We are thrilled to be donating our kitchen compost to Heathcote Botanical Garden's community compost, as well as to The Compost Gardener, Adina Lehrman. Instead of clogging our landfill, our scraps go to enriching the soil! And, on occasion, to some pig friends.
Our used fryer oil (peanut oil – no GMO's!) is hauled off and converted to bio-fuel.
We used zero voc primer and paint on the interior from Richard's Paint. Manufactured in Rockledge, FL, it is ideal for our sub-tropical climate and so much more affordable than many national brands we researched.
We installed impact resistant, low-e glass in the storefront.
We installed an awning (poly roof) over our storefront. We have western exposure, so this will significantly reduce our energy usage. Nicer for our customers, as well!
We have a low flow toilet and aerators on all our kitchen faucets.
All our cleaning products, dry goods and kitchen supplies are as earth friendly as commercially allowed.
All our takeout containers are either commercially compostable or recyclable. Our cutlery is 100% natural wood, certified as sustainably harvested.
We do not sell plastic bottles of plain water. It is an environmental nightmare in terms of the petroleum sourced plastic used to bottle it, and the fuel used to transport it. Instead, we offer filtered tap water, fluoride free American spring water in recycled glass bottles, or naturally flavored water (as well as a variety of other chemical free beverages).
We do not have a fax machine. The paper usage as well as the toxic process for manufacturing most inks has convinced us that email and telephone are the way to go.
All the paper products used by The S&S Takeout have recycled content; percentage varies depending upon the product.
We encourage regular customers to bring their own reusable containers.
COMMON SENSE WARNING: Containers must be brought in squeaky clean to ensure that there is no cross-contamination of food. We reserve the right to refuse using your container if it does not meet commercial sanitation guidelines.
Please feel free to bring in your own bag! Paper or plastic? Neither!
Our t-shirts are 100% organic cotton and printed with non-toxic ink at a facility powered by wind and human sweat.
